The bond between the brainy beauty and introvert didn’t just spark an onscreen romance. Dyer and Heaton fell in love behind the scenes following the release of season 1 in July 2016. Argyle and Fred, their friends, notice that the distance is straining their relationship and confront Jonathan and Nancy about why they aren’t visiting each other over Spring Break. Season 4 introduces distance between the couple, with Nancy in Hawkins and Jonathan in California.
But of course, distance can sometimes be a death sentence for even the strongest of relationships. Fans are always asking if they’re still together as the couple does post less on Instagram these days, but according to an interview with Cosmopolitan, in May just before season 4 dropped, Natalia confirmed they are still together. During the final two episodes of season 4, Steve thanks Nancy for giving him a “wake-up call” years before and wonders if they could have made it work had that happened earlier in his life. He also tells her that he envisions himself with six children — and her by his side.
Jonathan’s Stranger Things Death Would Solve A Major Ending Problem
Unfortunately, after the Byers moved to California in season 4, Jonathan and Nancy’s relationship has faced a lot of turmoil. A previously released teaser for Stranger Things season 4 saw the return of Dr. Brenner aka Papa, the researcher and director of Hawkins National Laboratory. During season 1, he was seen experimenting on Eleven and manipulating her psychokinetic abilities. He was later presumed to be dead, so it is likely the season will take fans on a trip back in time, revealing details about Eleven’s past and Dr. Brenner’s evil intentions. Heaton’s popular ’80s-inspired, grown-out bowl cut made an appearance throughout the three seasons of the sci-fi series.

Nancy sat down with a smile and asked if Max was alright, to which Max confirmed while admitting she couldn’t sleep since everyone kept blasting music in her ears. Nancy took notice of her drawings of a broken house, and pieced them together to realize that she saw Victor Creel’s house in Vecna’s mindscape. When Nancy was cursed by Vecna, Max attempted to assist the group find music to play, but informed Erica that they could not find anything. After discovering Vecna’s true identity, Nancy was reluctant to have Max use herself as a bait to draw out Vecna in order to kill him, but went along with the plan. When Vecna’s clock chimed four times, Nancy was visibly horrified to discover Max was gone. After Eleven revived Max, Nancy visited her comatose friend at the hospital.
The two pretend their relationship is working but Jonathan avoids Nancy in fear of confronting the future. After an honest conversation with his friend Argyle, he admits he’s trying to “slowly break up with her.” By the end of volume 1, Nancy and Jonathan still have not spoken about their relationship. For Nancy and Jonathan, it appears that those expectations are taking them in opposite directions.

Nancy and Jonathan share a passionate and emotional kiss goodbye as she watches with her brother, Dustin, Lucas and Max as they leave Hawkins. One year after the events of season 1, Nancy and Steve have been consistently having dinners with Barb’s parents. Barb’s parents do not know that Barb is dead, and have hired a private investigator to look into her disappearance, financing the investigation by selling their house. The private investigator, Murray Bauman, is a bit of a conspiracy theorist, and is shown harassing Hopper for information and sharing his theories. Nancy is still overcome with grief over Barbara’s death and begins showing potential signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, believing she is seeing Barbara’s ghost following her in the school’s library.
While attempting to clean herself, Nancy revealed to Steve that she did not really have feelings for him. As she put to bed by Jonathan, she drunkenly reached out to him before passing out. After Chief Hopper and Jonathan’s mother Joyce met Nancy and Jon at the police station, they shared everything they knew about the Demogorgon. After finding Nancy’s brother Mike and his friends Lucas, Dustin and Eleven, the group decided to build a makeshift sensory deprivation tank, which Eleven could use to look for Barb and Will in the Upside Down. They broke into Hawkins Middle, using the resources there and creating the bathtub in the gymnasium.
Well, it’s arguably because Nancy initially treats her in a way that could suggest jealousy, as she immediately becomes warmer to Robin once it’s clear that the latter isn’t romantically interested in Steve. Steve becomes increasingly protective of Nancy, including a moment where he insists that he go with her to meet a supposed serial killer in a psychiatric facility. His need to accompany her is so apparent that other characters tease him about it.
I just hope that if they do go in this direction, we would at least get a scene with Nancy and Jonathan talking about their relationship issues and what went wrong. However, in 1985, Nancy was shown to still be on good terms with Murray, as he gave her and Jonathan the keys to his house so they and the kids can be safe from the Mind Flayer. In 1985, Max wrote Nancy’s name to potentially spy on her using El’s powers when making a spin-the-bottle type game on who to spy on. Nancy and Max reunited when they, Mike, Eleven, Lucas, Will, and Jonathan searched for the Flayed. When Max and Mike argued over who should decide what Eleven should do, Nancy took Max’s side, reiterating her points that El wasn’t stupid and knew her abilities better than anyone, with Max thanking her for proving her point. When hiding out at the Starcourt mall, Max became worried that Nancy would kill Billy as she saw her load a gun, but Nancy assured her that the gun was only a precaution.
